Clinics and Services

Anticoagulation (DOACs)

We provide a full service for anticoagulation, including commencement and initiation of Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs) and Warfarin initiation and monitoring.

For queries related to Warfarin, please contact the Prescribing Team if you are running out or one of the Practice Nurses if you have a query regarding your dose. If you are experiencing heavy bleeding, please dial 999.

For minor bleeding, please contact one of the Practice Nurses.

Asthma

Patients with asthma should have a review every year, even if their symptoms are well-controlled. We will usually invite you for a review in the month of your birthday. Please book in with the Asthma nurse when you receive your letter. If you do not receive a letter, please contact our Administration Team.

Baby and Child Health Clinic

Baby clinics are held every Wednesday at Ivor Street Surgery and every Tuesday at Troed-Y-Fan. These are led by the Health Visitors who are your first point of contact for all issues related to young children.

The Health Visitors are responsible for infant feeding problems and monitoring the weight of babies and young children.

Childhood immunisations are also done during these clinics. Immunisations are done at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age, at 1 year of age, and at 3 years and 4 months old.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are taken every morning by appointment only.

Please note that if the hospital consultant has asked you to have a blood test at the GP surgery, they are required to provide the forms stating which tests are required.

We cannot complete the blood test without the forms.

CDAT – Drug and Alcohol Support

We host an outreach clinic for the Community Drug and Alcohol Team, supervising prescriptions for opiate replacement therapy for our patients.

Cervical Smears

Women aged between 25 and 64 are invited for cervical smears every 3 to 5 years. Letters are sent to eligible patients by Cervical Screening Wales when their smear is due. To book a smear, please book an appointment with one of our practice nurses.

Chronic Disease Management / Medication Reviews

Patients with certain long-term conditions will be contacted annually, in the month of their birthday, for their Chronic Disease Management (CDM) review. They will be invited to book an appointment with the Healthcare Assistant who will carry out tests, such as weight, blood tests and diabetic foot checks. Following your HCA appointment, the doctor will write to you with the results and any comments.

Contraception / Family Planning

We provide comprehensive contraceptive services, including insertion of contraceptive implants and coils. For pill checks and Depot injections please book an appointment with one of the Practice Nurses. For information about an implant or coil, please speak to one of our Practice Nurses or GPs.

ECGs

We provide ECG monitoring at all of our Practices, if requested by the GP.

Flu / Pneumonia / Shingles Vaccination

Flu Vaccinations

The following people are eligible to receive the flu vaccine free:

  • Pregnant women
  • Those aged 65 years or over
  • Those in long-term residential care homes
  • Carers of those patients at risk of flu
  • Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals
  • Those aged 6 months to 65 years who are at high risk:
  • People with Respiratory (lung) diseases, including asthma and COPD
  • People who have heart disease, kidney disease or liver disease
  • People who have neurological (brain or nerve) conditions including learning disability and multiple sclerosis
  • People with diabetes
  • People with severely weakened immune system (immunosuppression), those who have had their spleen removed, or those with sickle cell anaemia or coeliac disease
  • People who are obese (BMI of 40 and above)

Babies under 6 months old are too young to receive a flu vaccine. This is because they have maternal antibodies passed on from their mother which prevent the vaccine from working so well. Flu vaccination is offered to all pregnant women in the UK.  As well as protecting pregnant women themselves, this also helps to protect their newborn babies from flu.

We usually run “drop-in” clinics at Ivor Street Surgery with the dates advertised on social media and at the Practice.

Pneumonia Vaccinations

Pneumonia vaccinations are available to all adults over 65 and those aged under 65 who are at high risk:

  • People who have had their spleen removed
  • People with chronic respiratory, heart, kidney, or liver disease
  • People with diabetes
  • People who are immunosuppressed due to a medical condition or treatment (e.g. chemotherapy for cancer or disease-modifying drugs for certain types of arthritis)
  • People with cochlear implants
  • People with cerebrospinal fluid leaks (including leakage following trauma or major skull surgery).

Shingles Vaccinations

Shingles vaccinations are available to all patients aged between 70 and 79. You will be contacted by the Practice when you are eligible.

Health Visitor

Health visitors work with children up to five years of age and their families, promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing illness. They are responsible for childhood vaccination, weight monitoring and have special expertise in infant feeding.  Our health visitors are based at Ivor Street Surgery.

INR Clinic

INR clinics are held on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Ivor Street Surgery for those patients on warfarin. Clinics are also held on Wednesdays at Troed-Y-Fan.

Midwife

Community midwives are responsible for antenatal care. When a woman discovers that she is pregnant, she should register their pregnancy.
